What foods do you feed your axolotls?

So, im interested in knowing what foods you guys feed your axies.. not just staples but treats too... and what do your axies love best?

Earthworms and blue planet pellets. I'll be giving them silkworms as treats maybe once a month / few weeks so I'll see how they go down!

Treats. I mentioned scallops just the other day on another post. They get very excited for that. Yesterday I gave them small pieces of raw shrimp for the first time and that may be the new favorite.

Blue planet pellets havent heard of them ... as of today I fed mine a cricket for the first time ... she gulped it down! was thinking about pellets didbt know where to start looking .. blue planet il look up

That sounds quite exotic! My axie used to like crushed muscle but now turns her nose up to it ... so fussy! Would anyone feed there axies crickets as a staple? Just wondering ^^ if its a good source for them besides knoeing earthworms are one of if not the best

Worms, lots of worms.

Occasionally waxworms or river shrimp. I also have some guppies that I bred for food, but they stay at the surface in the axie tank and the axies prefer to stay on the bottom. My cherry shrimp have just got to a suitable number to try a few as food. I have tried them with prawns - they are not interested.

My babies get BBS, daphnia and live/frozen bloodworms.

I'm personally not a huge fan of varying their diet with weird things just for the sake of varying their diet. Earthworms are the best nutritionally, so that's what my baby is going to get. (He's still a juvenile on bloodworms at the moment)

I also have some high quality salmon pellets I might offer him occasionally. I think that'll be it for my bby. I'm not a fan of feeder fish (risk of disease, and I kinda keep some of those fish as pets...) and I just don't see anything else worth feeding him that isn't unhealthy or just out of left field.

Haha id like to tty river shrimp some say cherry shrimp too? Have you tried those dont know whether to or not yet. Mine loves her prawns but obviously she cant have them that often :-/ she loves her worms too I need to get a better worm bin going my ones before I didnt start off with enough to breed... so at the minute shes on crickets which are aparently a good staple? Thoughts .... ? How big arr your babies now? :O ....

Everyones entitled to their own opinions Kaini. Im sure you know what's best for your lil beauty! I like to give varied just for palatability reasons and sometimes just to see what she likes and what she doesn't. So far ive found out she turns her nose up at previous food and wont eat it if theres something else she wants (bloodworm as a treat instead of crushed muscle which she used to eat) ... id like to try pellets just where to start with brands etc. :-/

I had recently switched over to earthworms but I have been keeping some shrimp and a few guppies with my axolotls. I noticed today my axolotls are finally getting fast enough to eat some of the guppies

Only two guppies have disappeared, they seem to love earthworms almost as much as blood worms and black worms. I haven't kept tabs on the shrimp but wouldn't be shocked if a few of been munched on. I've read that guppies are one of the better fish to feed to axolotls but I won't make it a staple of their diet. These are fancy guppies I've had since last year, the nearest pet store sells feeder guppies but the tank is almost always filled with dead fish.

That sucks! Id love to try mine on those, that was the whole idea for this post really to find out what you guys feed but also get ideas too thankyou although I guess the dead fosh thing can be a problem so you agree just earthworms as a staple everything else as a supplementry snack

Absolutely, earthworms and pellets provide them with the most nutritional diet. Whenever you are feeding them live food like shrimp and fish, its really important to quarantine them so you're not introducing parasites. I'd say stick with the worms maybe blood worms as a treat but don't be surprised if your axolotl becomes spoiled

Haha I think she already is and she knows it toohaha! ... shes gone from having bloodworm to prawns as a treat turkey around christmas crushed muscle and brine shrinp in between times now crickets and when I can get hold of some more earthworms haha! .... do you think crickets are okay for now as a staple until im able to get the money for going online to buy earthworms... or digging them up in my sisters garden (no pesticides etc used but I quarantine them too for like a month :-/ ) many thanks

I'd avoid any meat like chicken/turkey/beef/pork, they just aren't able to digest it well and it can build up gas in them making them really sick. If you can find red wigglers get those and look online on starting your own worm farm so you always have some available. Crickets are not really that nutritious, especially pet store crickets and they usually lack calcium which is why most reptile owners dust theirs with calcium powder. You can try to feed the crickets high calcium diets right before you feed them but I wouldn't make crickets a long term food.

Okay thankyou so much for your help I heard they lacked alot of protein too ? Because they are so small and have hardly any "meat" on them. Do you recommend any other foods for atleast a month and a half? Apart from bloodworm?

black worms are a good option if you can find them, If it is only for a month then crickets might be okay (just make sure to load the crickets up on healthy food right before) calcium and protein deficiency develop over time but one month won't be too bad, If any other members can think of another food source besides the ones mentioned in this thread that'd be great too

I just got my two axolotls yesterday I plan on feeding them mainly earthworms but maybe the occasional axolotls sinking pellet every now and then and maybe a very occasional bloodworm treat first day at their new home and much to my surprise not expecting them eat due to the stress of moving they ate an earthworm each
