What If I Don't Want My Axolotls Anymore?

brella -

I just ran across this thread. Did you ever find a solution?
I live just up the road in Los Alamos (OK, 2 hr north) and may be able to help. We have one axolotl now, and that's all we need, but we might be able to help find homes for your two. The local middle school has a few in a large setup, and may be able to accept a couple more.

I'll send you a message if I can in case you are not following this thread anymore.

Followup:

These axolotls have found a good home, at our local Middle School. One teacher who was into raising them retired, but another has come onto the scene, and is reviving the classroom axolotl business. Cheers to our new teacher, Bob, who brought them up from Albuquerque!

Hi Brella. Don't worry to much about what you spent. My daughter came home one day with an axolotl, thought they were cute and wanted one. Didn't find out much information on them. She had the wrong tank advise, she was told this and that from so called aquariums. Wasn't the right information in the first place. I ended up taking the axolotl on board, buying a decent tank 3 ft in length, added another axolotl both females, spent on so many plants which just fell apart after a couple of weeks so ended up buying log plants which out last most plants. By the time I bought their different types of food from shrimp brine, blood worms, beef heart and small white bait, I am happy to say they are still happy and healthy, but I spent for a good tank $279 which has the filter with it, log plants 2 at $40 each plus a couple of rocks for the tank bed and various axalotl food, I'd say at least $400 to set them up the way I wanted. I don't regret it, as they have become my pets now and not my daughters. Don't let anyone make you feel like you have overspent, everyone is different on what sort of setup they want for their axies.

The most shocking thing I find about this thread is - the prices!!!

Wow! 260 euros! I feel lucky now! I got a 3 foot tank on Ebay for $56 with stand, light, hood, gravel (which I gave away), driftwood, tester kits and a 1 month supply of tropical fish food that I haven't managed to get rid of yet and is gathering dust as we speak.

Well brella, I certainly give you credit for admitting you're in over your head.

Good for you, if you can't or choose not to, or simply don't want to commit to the work needed and you want to find them homes, then kudos to you. A lot of people might just let them languish, not care for them and that would be bad. Whether you take the time to provide them with the care they need- or you find someone else to do it the important part is that you will be acting in their best interest.

The important part now is not how you got into this situation, but how you will get yourself out of it.
