I was wondering what the best recipe for culturing melonogaster fruit flies is? Also how inexpensive is it to make compared to buying a kit online?

Maybe there are as much recipes as users.

My recipe is :
- 1 banana (without the skin)
- 2 large spoons of vinegar
- I add oats flakes until it is no more liquid

In my opinion, best is easiest. I don't mix my own. I have used several commercially prepared fruit fly diets, all seem to work.

How is the smell on this recipe? It wont stink up my whole house will it?

I still use carolina biological supply formula 4-24 It works great and their are less failures.

about 10 1/2 cup cultures per bag or 75 to 85 fruit fly vials per bag.
