hi, i am remaking my new 55 gal, and i need some plants.
what plants work well in about 2 feet of water in around 65-70 degrees?(with axolotls of coarse)
Java moss, elodea, and java fern are the good ole standbys. You can try searching the forums as I have seen this question asked many of times, maybe there are more specific plants in one of those threads.
I also have the lace java fern, as well as anubias nana and barteri. I have heard that most of the anubias ones do well. Like was said, java fern and java moss work really well too. I would recommend all these ones.
Anubias Nana - great plant, virtually indestructible, hardy and low maintenance.
Anubias Isabelle - very tough, taller than the Nana.
Anubias Barteri - just like the Nana, but a bit bigger and with rounder leaves.
Java Fern - one of the toughest aquatic plants you can get - grows anywhere!
Java Moss - grows anywhere as well, can be made into a sort-of "carpet"
Lilaeopsis - this is like grass, you can make a beautiful lawn in your tank with it.
Eleocharis (Hairgrass) - same as with Lilaeopsis tends to be a bit taller though.
Pongol - this is actually Mondo Grass, so it's not a true aquatic but survives (doesn't grow, just survives) for ages submerged, not really recommended.
Congensis - quite striking for a centrepiece plant.
Riccia - Riccia generally needs a lot of light to grow properly, thus only suitable for brighter tanks.
I've had miserable luck with plants. The exception is Java moss and Bolbitus heudelotii(African fern). The fern is a very slow grower but seems to withstand my lumbering axies. It has a delicate frond and is also easy to remove if a frond dies. It doesn't clog my syphon.
Hornwort works really well also. It dosen't need to be planted because it has no roots and it thrives under a range of temperatures and lighting. It also is used as a place to rear baby platys or mollies if you want to add fish with your axie!
