My axies will probably hatch in the next few days, but i'm worried that i won't have enough daphnia to feed them! there are about 25 eggs. can i feed them salmon pellets or some other kind of food? i know that most people wait until the babies are older, but what if you wiggle the pellets in front of the babies, so that they think its live food? or would the pellets just make them sick?

Pellets tend to foul the water quickly. I am raising babies too at the moment and they have been eating live black-worm (I chop it a bit to make it nice and small,) so perhaps that.

this might sound like a stupid question, but can you buy the worms at a pet shop? Daphnia is the only live food that is conveniant for me to buy at the moment. the other stuff seems to too hard to come across here?
I don't mind doing frequent water changes if it means i don't have to stress about breeding there food! ha ha. perhaps i'll do an experiment on one or two of the babies and see if any of them take to the pellets.

you can feed newly hatched larvae BBS (baby brine shrimps). You can raise them by your own, so you´ll always have enough food for your babies.:D

Hi Axie23, you should probably find a local petshop that stock BBS eggs like mentioned before, just in case, they take 12-48 hours to hatch in seawater (or substitute salt purchased from the petshop) and are great for the first couple of weeks. they are most nutrious for the axolotl larvae. Only use the pellets if you have to.

@ your other question, yes you can buy earthworms from the petsore they are only cheap. I collect them for my adult axolotls out the backyard, I put a wet piece of cardboard in the shade in a not so grassy spot and leave it for a day or more (longer the better). there should be plenty of worms for your axolotl under there when you collect.

Goodluck!! :D
