What to get?

I have a huge 4ft long 2.5ft wide and 2ft high tank coming my way (for only £150!) and I'm not sure what to get. It won't really fit inside so an outdoor vivarium is my only option, it can go in a shed thoug, which would keep it a bit warmer. I'm thinking of some sort of Bufo, maybe B. Viridis. I'm not really sure what to put in it, I'd want to have a large group of whatever I get, and I'd like something mostly terrestrial, but I'm open to aquatic suggestions as well.

I would suggest Pelophylax species, Bufo species or Bombina species. Like you say, B.viridis would be a good idea.

I would highly recommend some Salamandra. They are wonderful animals, beautiful colors, hardy animals, great eaters, and are very good for outdoor vivarium's.
Bombina species are not recommended to go below 35 F during hibernation, so if the temperatures are going to be getting lower than that they are probably not a good choice. On the other hand B. orientalis can't get close to that low, and aren't too good with cold, so they probably aren't going to be an option anyway.

I was thinking more along the lines of B.variegata and B.bombina. They would still probably need to be removed for the winter, maybe you could hibernate them in your shed.

Hmm, Salamdra, that's a contender... I also thought that Paramesotriton could be a good contender, just have to find some first.....

If you want some S.s.terrestris I should have some juveniles available in late spring.

I have to suggest some Taricha. You know how much I love them. They would probably do quite well in a vivarium, as they are quite tolerant of cold temperatures. Plus the natural winter and photoperiod would probably be enough to breed them. They are large, hardy newts, and can be kept semi aquatic or half and half. They could even be kept in a terrestrial setup in the summer, fall, and winter, and then put into a aquatic setup in the spring for breeding. Of course you would need two tanks for that.
Plus you would have the bonus of making me jealous

Well, I'm getting some Salamandra for the viv. I do love all things Taricha but the genus is really hard to get hold of over here. However, I hear there have been breedings in Germany...
