What's up with Toki's gills?

I've posted about it before, but it's starting to worry me a bit.
His gills are...dead ends. They're white at the tips and are appearing to get shorter. They've been like this since I got him. How can I return them to normal gill state?
His conditions are great, lots of plants, very clean water, 65 F temps. He's fed very well, earthworms and pellets mostly.

Do you know the water parameters? Like pH, ammonia, nitrates and nitrites?

They're all 0. pH is neutral, 7.
My water is slightly hard because it is well water. All my other axolotls love it though.

Did you get him when he was a juvenile? One of mine has very short gills but is in perfect health, so I don't think it's unusual. Axolotl gills can come in all shapes and sizes from the extra fluffy, to the barely there! I've also noticed my luecistic often gets white tips but this tends to be when he hasn't been very active.

Was/is he kept with any fish? And 0 ppm nitrate is very unusual

The gills look fine to me.

Yeah I got him when he was a juvie, still is a juvie. About 6" I'd say.
Maybe I'm just a bit more concerned with his gills than I should be.

Your concern means you want for the best for him and it's always better to be safe than sorry, right? :happy: I'd say he looks great but obviously if you're still worried just keep an eye on them.
