I miss chat.

It's just past 8pm now on Thursday evening my time. I'm still at work, just waiting for some solvent to evacuate so I checked my email and saw this thread. I'm not sure what time I will be leaving here today but I can assure you that the chat is not on the top of my list of things to do when I get home. Right now my list looks like this: get groceries, go home and eat, sleep.

I've set aside time this weekend to get a handle on some of the things that have been waiting a while and the chat is on that list. I wish Federal holidays were something I could avail of, since Monday is President's Day. Unfortunately I picked a career which involves slave labour...

And yes, I miss the chat too.

I just had a thought (it happens): If anyone wants to help speed up the chat issue, please see what current chat programs are available (preferably java or other applets that we can host on our server). Please avoid programs that require a subscription - I'm looking to pay a once off fee. Also please avoid anything in a scripting language like "php", "javascript" or "asp", unless it's the most amazing chat program on the planet.

Thank you.

I think going the IRC route makes sense. It won't even be necessary to host anything. In addition to the free IRC clients like mIRC, xchat, snak and others, There's an open-source java irc client that offers several web-based options.

a link in the format:
h ttp://jirc.hick.org/cgi-bin/launch.jnlp?irc://nicknameATirc.server.com/channel
will load the java applet jircII, sign you on to server "irc.server.com" and join channel "#channel" with user name "nickname" (the nickname@ part is optional).

you can try it out by clicking:
http://jirc.hick.org/cgi-bin/launch.jnlp?irc://irc.quakenet.org/caudata
which takes you to channel #caudata on the quakenet network.
or if that doesn't work, just
http://jirc.hick.org/jircii/jIRCii.jnlp
to start the client and then connect to the selected network and channel manually.
if you are interested check out the jircII website. they have some simple html code to make a pretty launch button to link.

Based on your preference to avoid php and javascript, my chat-savvy son also recommends going with IRC. I haven't tried it, but I'm told that it would have the basic features we have had with our own chatroom.

IRC has a lot of practical benefits, I agree. Unfortunately, it is a public medium over which I have no regulatory control. A lot of family unfriendly things go on there and I have no way to extirpate them from a Caudata.org channel since the channel would be part of IRC.

Yes, a bot can keep people out of the Caudata.org channel but I don't want to foster the use of IRC by, for example, teenage Caudata.org users, who wouldn't otherwise have used it.

I have a high preference for something I can ensure is moderated and separate from anything else on the Internet.
