Every town has swimming pool/spa stores, but they are usually small shops located in out-of-the-way places. So if you don't own a pool or hot tub, they are the kind of place you'd never notice! Check your local yellow pages.

Now that I think about it, Minnesota may not have a lot of swimming pools (besides the indoor commercial-scale ones). But I'm sure you have spa/hot tub stores, and you can call and ask if they carry pool filter sand.

Play sand is more expensive than pool filter sand (that I've found). And it's also much finer, which may make your water cloudier, and be harder to clean. But to each their own.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
