I am debating on which to use, should i use playsand or river rocks?

Which one would you use and why?

Thanks in advance,
Bret

Hello Baysidegeckos,

Most people would recommend play sand over river rocks because river rocks are relatively large and thus have a tendency of trapping debris (e.g. organic matter, decaying food etc.) underneath it. Although this can be cleaned, it will require much elbow grease and you will not remove all of the debris which will result in on-going water problems (i.e. elevated ammonia levels).

in my humble opinion I would go for play sand, It's cheap, easy to keep clean and looks good:D

I would also go with the play sand. Very easy to sift through, looks pretty, easy to stick your plants in if you have them, and it's very cheap. I got a 50lb bag of play sand for $3.25 (usd), and I've barely even used 5lbs yet.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
