White bits on gills.

I'm not sure if this is something to worry about, but when I looked at my axolotl this morning (golden albino, if it makes a difference), the tip of one of the gill 'branches' (does that make sense?) is white at the tip.

Sorry if it was badly explained, but I did try! Any ideas? The axolotl is about 5 inches long, I'd say, and I feed him on thawed bloodworm twice a day. No tankmates, all the levels in the water are fine and there aren't any other symptoms that I can see.

Couldbe natural markings or maybe fungus in on the way....mine has natural markings that are sorta white on the branches

Hi you, my golden one ( sounds like its really special!!) has white speckles along its gills and body. If it looks at all fluffy ( the white bit) it could be the dreaded fungus and will probably need the salt bath treatment. I noticed the other day that my male wild type had a whitish 'mark' on his side, as it was late i decided to leave it till the next morning. In the morning it had gone, with him I suspect it may have been a graze, he had been extra lively earlier that day. But I do keep a close eye on them , especially as the water temps had been rising..now cooler thanks to the fan. Keep a close eye on the gill, if its fluffy ( the white bit) then treat asap. the tip of one gill branch on my GA went white but nothing seems to have happened though i kept an eye on it for a while.

What's probably happening is that the gill stalks are starting to atrophy. That is, the axolotl is getting all the oxygen it needs, so it doesn't need bigger gills, and is reabsorbing parts of them. It's a normal and healthy thing.

If the white part looks fuzzy in any way (like velvet), then it could be a fungus.

But one should always keep in mind that axolotls are like any animal. Sometimes they get bumps and scrapes and odd markings. Most of the time, as long as your husbandry is adequate, these don't mean anything.
