Hi all,
I brought home my very first axolotl almost a week ago. In the first few days he damaged his tail, ripping off the fin almost all the way down his tail. A few days later it has formed the film ad pictured. Is this a fungal infection and if so how do I treat it and what with? I'm in Australia.

Thanks everyone,
Songbird.

I've done some more reading and it seems to suggest the film may just be part of the healing process rather than fungal... does this sound right?

Yes. You've got dead skin coming away and new skin growing - looks a mess, but it looks normal.

Might want to check that your ornaments have no sharp edges, because that is one of the worst cases I've seen so far of self damage within a tank.

Check the inside of any decorations with openings...that's usually where they are roughest
