Why are all my axies freaks?????

why do some axotolts randomly morph? there is one at the local pet shop that is starting to morph, it looks really cool. the wild ones would still be able to morph wouldnt they. even if they didnt want to.

Morphing happens genetically, the axolotls cannot choose if they want to morph. I believe the wild ones generally don't morph, but I wouldn't be surprised if some did.

I think morphing is mostly a genetic thing. Most axolotls in the U.S. don't morph. I've had thousands of them and never heard of any from my lines morphing. It seems like some lines in Europe and Australia are more likely to morph. Some people will tell you if it morphed it wasn't really a pure Ambystoma mexicanum.

My Friend has a morphed axi, his name is Sammy.
They bought him about eight years ago as a smallish axie, young i guess..
well anyways she thinks it morphed because of the changing water level( she went away and her mom forgot to put more water in his fish bowl, and when she came back, she had about an inch of water and a morphed axie)

dont worry it was a big fish bowl, i saw it.

I personally think that sammy is some sort of tiger half breed perhaps, I don't know. Sammy is awesome though.he has been living happily for about seven or eight years now.

The only wierd thing is, he doesnt like to come on land, she offered it to him and he stayed in the water. Her current set up has about an inch of water and a log , some moss and smooth rocks. Plenty of stuff he could some out of the water onto, he just doesn't seem to want to.

that sounds cool but i bet he missed playing around in the water.

Haha. Cool axie!! I think Kate's going to be a bit like that, she seems to prefer sitting ontop of the plants rather than on the little ramp thingy in her new tank.
It wouldn't surprise me if Kate wasn't a full breed axolotl. Her brother, Oberon(whos currently living with her), is a gold albino.
Oh, and Kate's skin is going frog-like!! (sorry about the description) but she's getting amphibian skin, with the little dimples and everything(yes, very unscientific, I know)lols

Lol Rita. Every herpetologist out there cringed at that one. But if she's developing tougher skin, I wouldn't be surprised if she morphed soon. Just make sure to offer her lots of land, if she chooses to get out.

I believe all albinos descend from a mating in the late 1800s of an albino tiger sal with an axolotl. There are still some old axolotl genes that can override the neoteny in axolotls. Very few, but occasionally it happens.

Keep us updated!

hee hee. I just wasn't quite sure how else to put it. I'm not very good with some of the terminology. lols

I really wanna see what Kate looks like too Hayley! Show us some pics Rita pleeeeeaaase!!

I'd love to see some photos as well. What is the diet of the one who morphed? Surely it could be pure genetics; if you feed pellets it's not unheard of either. I've never had one do it, but I don't have much pellet-feeding experience. The colony noticed a marked increase after changing their diets off of beef heart/liver puree--they were suspicious of vitamin A overdosing happening unintentionall--in the mid 80's I think, but it's still uncommon there.
