I'm not sure what it is, but I'm going to clean my tank soon anyways, my axolotl is still normal, but don't want it getting unhealthy

they look like they very well could be axolotl slime coat remains. if that is the case its probably because you have high ammonia or high temperature in your water. it could also be remains of plants. hope this helps :)

also make sure you have proper filtering in your tank :)
I'll test my water, but it's been good for close to 5 months now, he is still normal colored and eats normal. I think there is just buildup of plants of something on the bottom that stirs up, I'm not sure how to separate that from the substrate through.

if it is powdery and you have hard water or are adding any salts/mineral solutions it can be calcium carbonate (limescale) dropping out of the water column.
if they are moving around then they could be copepods which are harmless and quite common.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
