While struggling to rectify an algae problem, I've also noticed that my axie looks very round from a top view. I'm starting to worry that he has bloat.

I'm really trying to get his tank back under control and this is just another thing to worry about..

That certainly is very round. Is it possible its a female full of eggs? Also, was it a gradual change or did it balloon up quickly? Do any other areas look puffy, or just the abdomen? I can't tell in your picture.

I would say its too young to be gravid, no more than five months, and I'm not even sure of the sex yet.

As for how quickly it came up...I'm not sure. Gradual enough that I'm just now noticing?

I might suggest moving over to the "sick" thread. You'll probably be able to get more opinions if you post there.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
