i have a 20 gallon tank i want to make into a terrarium. it needs a lot of work, its pretty fugly right now. but i eventually want to make a beautiful natural scene with aquatic and terrestrial areas. im using a reptofilter to make a waterfall over the stump but it needs more style. i don't have any amphibians so i can play around with a few design options before i get some new pets. i don't have any specific goals except that it be a natural looking planted terrarium and i'd like to know a few options. i'd appreaciate hearing your design tips and methods you'd like to share. any comments and opinions would be greatly appreaciated. thanks.

Hi nitelyechos,

It might be cool to know what newts you want to keep in there :)

i'm not worried about what i want to keep yet, i just want to make a beautifully planted vivarium. this is just an opportunity for me to play around with designs and ideas. once i get something that looks good then i'll find an animal suited for the finished product.

It might be much better to do it the other way round. Find a species you can obtain easily (captive bred) and then design the tank around the needs of the animal. The demands of particular species differ quite a lot and you may end up with a beautiful set up which is not very good for a newt you can actually get.

Have a look at the articles and photos here http://www.caudata.org/cc/index.shtml and in the Vivaria section of the photo gallery here.

It would probably be much better to raise the water level to achieve better stability. I don't know how big the tank is but dividing a small tank into land and water areas usually results in having too little water which means the quality is hard to maintain.
