Did it eat the whole thing? My mudpuppy which is very large (about 9 inches or 23 cm) has trouble with even large earthworms.

yes, it ate the whole thing, it just took him a while. I live here in Finland and we do have earthworms that big in our gardens.

God, I've had to wait ages for mine to deal with a big earthworm... I had to feed them bloodworms/tubifix worms (Yannick - tieksä mikä on surviaisia englanniksi?) for ages and we don't have a freezer so it was a bit tricky - had to go to the shop every day almost... Now they are on earthworms (which I still buy from the shops - waiting for my part of Finland to thaw...).

Blimey, that IS a good sized worm. I'm always impressed with how far they can stretch though.
When I was purging a big one in a jug, it reached up, and escaped over the top!

Yeah my earthworms do that and they sometimes fall on the floor. Gross. And I'm sure my karma won't last feeding worms to the axies, but hey, they have to eat I suppose

But with the earthworm issue, mine ate worms the first time I give them, they eat maybe two three worms a day, and I've got loads of them in the backyard.

What time of the year can you start collecting earthworms in your garden? I still have to get mine from a shop and they cost €6.50 for a small box.

Try growing your own! 
Use a cheap plastic tank, fill it with compost, dead leaves etc that are free from chemicals/herbicides/pesticides.
You might want to drill and put a tap valve in to release extra liquids from the bottom (do this in the garden!!!).
Simply pop your worms in, put a secure but well ventilated lid on (elastic band and some netting works well), place in a dark, warm spot, and feed weekly on vegetables. A spoon of mashed potato is good worm food, as well as flake fish food. The better quality things you feed them, the better quality they will be when it comes to dinnertime.
Make sure it doesn't get too dry in there by spraying with dechlorinated water or rainwater when needed.
Tiger Worms (or red striped worms - dendrobaena) tend to be fast breeders, but have a bitter flavour so may not be accepted.
Lob worms are slower, but easy to keep.

well the spring here in Vaasa is getting warmer and I've been collecting worms for a week or two from my garden, they love them(the axes
)I actually don't know where in the world they came from but I know that the aquarium shop orders from germany. I didn't know about the cites certificate until later, but maybe I could go there and ask for one. My axies are (I think) about three, four months maybe, they had just started evolving feet when I got them about a 6 weeks ago. And yep, I'm half french! Oui!

By the way PMR, Have you tried feeding them shrimp-pellets? Mine love them.

Yeah look at them have a big barney though! So funny...
I got mine at the beginning of February when they were tiny (literally tadpoles! Had to hand-feed them one bloodworm at a time!) and I've had them for two months so they are four months old.
I've only ever seen axolotls in Finland once, a few years back, but they were two adults. When I got mine, it seemed that there'd been a huge influx of them as every pet shop had them (in tanks with a gravel and heater, of course - well, they look "exotic" so they need to be in warm water, right?).
Must go outside to see if the ground is okay now. It was raining last night so that should've softened the earth a bit.
I do feed them carp pellets as these sink to the bottom, but since they've been on a diet of earthworms, they kind of snub the pellets and I end up syphoning them up when I clean.
Hey, Yannick, do you know where to get turkey basters here in Finland? They don't seem to have them at all... Would make my job a whole lot easier!!!
