In my experience i tested the water once or twice a week and recorded the results so i could see the progress but your tank wont be properly cycled until about 4 weeks or longer so just be patient

Actually, a fishless cycle can be done in 2 weeks. If the ammonia is still reading 0, you need to add more. Since you're doing a fishless cycle, you can bring the ammonia way way up. Since I guess you're using food, don't put a little in there, dump it in there! This is going to cause you to have to clean up a lot of gunk from the substrate, but that's how the ammonia is going to build up. I've always just used pure ammonia, you can get it in cleaning isles at grocery stores.

i am off to the supermarket tomorrow so i might have a look for some ammonia, as I'm not keen on ceasing up loads of gunk before i even have my axy! hahaha thanks for the help

Just make sure it's pure ammonia. If it has any other chemicals in it other than ammonia, you're going to kill anything that is kept in there.

Boiling the water gets rid of the chlorine or use the hot water out of your geyser and let it stand for a couple of days to get to room Temperature.
Or I use a product called Stability by Seachem.

At any given time I have a 25L containers (6.6Gallon) just standing ready for a water change.
