I'm new with newts and have a few questions. How many meal worms will this little guy eat? He ate one right when I got him home so I'm sure he's happy. Someone told me I can also take him out to feed him. Seems to me he would be happier eating inside his normal house.

Should the light be kept on at all times or left off for him to sleep? Also I've been thinking of getting another and possibly mating them, any advice? Thanks guys.

First, forget everything they told you at the pet store. Second, read these:
http://www.caudata.org/cc/faq/faq.shtml

Mealworms aren't the greatest food (http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/foods.shtml). Better to feed him in his regular tank, just be sure to take out all uneaten food. The light doesn't really matter, whatever looks nice and minimizes heat. Be sure the lid is secure (http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/escape.shtml). Handling should be kept to a bare minimum. Looks like the tank needs a lot more water. For land area, use rocks or floating islands. See:
http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/setups2.shtml

If you want more than one newt, it's better to get them at the same time. Introducing new ones later can bring in diseases that will kill the established one(s).

Thanks for the help Jen. What is the best food for a little guy like that then, the baitshop worms? I'm thinking I should get some kind of water filter, also there are little chunks of the multicolour rocks floating around sometimes and I knock them down to the bottom. I'm starting to think of getting him a buddy and wondering aswell if you have any information here on breeding them thanks again.

Personally, I feed my group until either they turn down the worms, I notice them taking them with less vigour, or they start to bulge. I feed them every 2-3days.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
