I need to get my hands on some of these...I can see great applications for a naturalistic tank for raising limited amounts of juveniles of certain species in a shallow water environment. All that cover and surface is just ideal. Nasturtium officinale, we´ll meet soon!

I suspect its light. The potted ones are on the far side of the tank, the free floating escapee is right under a light.

I tried free floating but it did not work well... maybe was an issue with lighting. Maybe Bella has a trick I don't know
Glad to see I am not the only watercress nut on the block ;-)

wonderful pictures Francios! Are those rooted in any substrate? and after reading ocean blue's comment I am going to look for some next time I go to the Grcoery Store. I'll keep you updated as to how it works.

After keeping up with this post I decided to look for some seeds today. I found and bought a packet labeled Organic Cress Seeds. So would you guys think this is going to be watercress or slap it in a pot and see what happens? The package has a picture that looks a lot like your photos but doesn't elude to it being watercress. Anyway, we will see if I found it. If not ill just keep looking.

Yes they grow in dirt submerged just slightly by water.

When I bought my first watercress last June or July (anything u see on the pics is the result of propagation) it was in a small pot of dirt... Watercress does not need to grow in H2O but in that case the dirt must be moist at all time. I am quite sure you bought the right thing....

Thanks I hope your right. I put the seeds in some moist soil mixed with cocofiber and when I get some plants going strong I will try to move some to water and hope for the best. Thanks for all the info this is a great thread.

In western Poland watercress can be quite common in certain spots. I find them in moist forest ground next to the stream:

I used watercress in some plant-tanks and in my instance, in mud-cultivation it dies after bloom:

I have put some of watercress under water and plants that weren't under water before I took them home died. Two months ago I found a lot of this specie in stream of Adršpach-Teplice Rocks. :happy:

It's been a week since buying a £1 bag of water cress from a supermarket. It was hacked up into bite size salad chunks so I wasn't expecting much from the cuttings. I placed a few promising looking pieces into a water filled wine glass on the kitchen windowsill. The rest went in the outdoor tubs.

You can see that roots are growing well and new foliage is appearing. The cuttings outside are also rooting but they grow slower in the cold.

I just found out my parents have some on the fridge, i´m off to raid them!

I do like Mark's artistic watercress.
I wonder how may different varieties there are. I tried one a year or so ago, which was delicious, but it never rooted in the tank. I got some more that is sold for outdoor ponds and this was much happier. I have seen packets of seed watercress which you grow just in damp soil. All seem slightly different.

I want to grow some outside now in my container ponds. Maybe it can give more cover, and stop me from losing gallons to evaporation everyday. @_@

Can I just like, throw the seeds in there? Once I find seeds and all...

Of course, I've been known to kill duckweed, so, this might not work for me. D:

I bought some watercress at the store, made a sandwhich, and decided to see if I could use them like bunched plants at fish stores.

And you CAN. I gathered some stems up, tied them together and planted them in outside ponds. I carelessly threw the rest into my angelfish tank and they floated around. Now I have all these little shoots coming up out of the water~ And one of the smaller angels loves them.


Also, it was CHEAP. I paid like $2, ate some, and had PLENTY left for the fishies. Why haven't I done this before?

Recently in mountains i collected another species of watercress- Cardamine amara (or another Cardamine species) which i believe might be commonly mistakened with Nasturtium officinale. I put some stems in very small jar with water in the window, and it seems to be growing nicely. A lovely plant! Some photos in situ:
