I know i shouldn´t...and i tell myself everyday "No, Rodrigo, don´t do it....you have too many animals for what your circumstances allow as it is".....buuuuuuuuut....they are so pretty xDD
I´m now the proud host and servant of a group of 4 juvenile Neurergus kaiseri. I had never seen in person any members of this genus before and i was hooked from the very first second. They are really quite something.
I inmensely enjoy observing their behaviours. They are the only species i keep with a current, which they really seem to apreciate. They grab hold of the rocks in the craziest positions and they really like to cram themselves into small spaces. They are slowly becoming less skittish but at first they were a bit of a nightmare. Aside from being terribly photophobic, you couldn´t approach the tank without them panicking. I could picture their thoughts "here comes the huge, lumbering monster! Scatter!". Now they tolerate me better and will even eat in front of me and allow me to take pictures! I consider it a substantial accomplishment :D

They are far more interesting and of course, beautiful, than i ever imagined.

Excuse the bad quality of the pictures. I take bad pictures in general, but these newts don´t cooperate at all which doesn´t help. The light in the pictures was used only for the purpose of trying to get those pictures. Normally they only receive indirect light.

Resistance is futile! These guys seem to know they're something special - mine were the only caudates given the honour of winter in the house but will be conveyed to the newt room on a path of rose petals soon :D

It's always good to see photos of kaiseri even if they are in extra-glamorous soft focus..

They only get more beautiful as they grow. Despite their desperate status in the wild I think they may be one of the ultimate pet species. Undemanding to keep, easy to breed and rather pleasing on they eye. What more could you want?

I know....i can see the white creeping on their sides and i can´t wait. I have to say, though, what strikes me the most about them is not necessarily their undeniably beautiful coloration, but their behaviour. Every time i see them crammed in some nook with their long tails ondulated in front of them it makes me smile. They are nothing like any other species i keep. I´m afraid i´ve been bitten by the "torrent newt" bug....i´m scared.....

cool. Off to the padded cell with Az hehe. Those are lovely newts indeed.

The strauchii have the same tendency to squeeze themselves into tight corners; sometimes all of them into the same one :)

So...how much of a current do you have in there?

As long as the cell is padded with pictures of caudates, i won´t resist.

The current is quite localized. It´s a small, average powerhead, but i couldn´t possibly qualify it´s strength other than saying "moderate" xD It is directed with a small piece of tube through the bottom of the tank at the right, back corner. It creates a moderately strong current through a couple of crevices then crashes against the left glass and difusses away. They can choose between various spots with different degrees of current and the brick holes which have no current to speak of. They seem to prefer the medium current areas with the ocassional stroll elsewhere.

N.strauchii has always been very bright on my radar...now that i have tasted Neurergus i know it will eventually happen....there´ no scaping that reality.

Ian, of course you need some, you are only human after all :p
