Coldest night of the year so far. They're projecting -50F wind chill.

The herp room doesn't have any storm windows on, and these windows are pretty drafty. We've got the heat cranked, so it's actually a little warm in the herp room tonight!

Thank goodness for heaters & aircons :)

On this side of the world we're still recovering from a 46degC day 115F!

Man, that cold front is delaying my crested gecko arrival from the East Coast as well! Here in Cali everything is warming up, on the other hand.

Sorry Jasper. It's holding up a lot of things! Doesn't help with MLK day in there either. Just a bad week for shipping all around. I was suppose to get a frog this week, but I decided I better hold off.

Olivia, that room isn't heated; I have the vents blocked with blankets. I'm cooling the salamanders for winter, so I'd actually like it colder than that in there! 57F is 13C, for you reasonable, metric folk. For cooling purposes, I'd like to drop it down to 5C or so. Luckily, I've got at least 3 more months of winter. *groan*

On warm days (when the temperature approaches freezing), I actually even open the windows. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm off my rocker.

For the record, the windchill hit -56F (-49C) last night! Warmed up to -37C today. I think I'll just stay in and work on my tile floor!

My bedroom has been 6 degrees C for the past couple of months, and that was before the snow.
I usually keep my room cool on purposwe for my newts, but I don't have any choice at the moment, because our central heating has stopped working :s

We Brits are wonderful at making a drama out of a bit of snow- it's currently -1C (30F) and we have been on the national news headlines a couple of days ago for 25cm(10in) snow. School closures all over the place and the BBC is saying the disruption will throw us into a triple dip economic recession!

I don't know how we would cope with -12F! Even the maths of converting it to C threw me as my daughter fed it into google as I was bashing the calculator with 5/9 and 32!

It's all a matter of perspective. Brits don't get much snow, or often, so when it does happen, it's a BIG DEAL! It was the same when I lived in Alabama. We'd get flurries, and the university would be closed for 3 days. I was terrified to leave my house, not because of the snow, but because of all the people who were freaking out because of it!

I've worked in both Russia and Finland over winters. It's pretty impressive to see 80+ year old people and young children trekking miles though waist deep snow like it's nothing, combine that with the extended periods of near 24 hour daylight they have in the summer and you suddenly understand the national fondness for Vodka ;)

I come back to the UK to find my 25 year old brother refusing to go outside because there is 2 inches on snow on the ground the big wuss

That's what I tell people; the cold isn't really that bad. You learn to deal, dress, drink it away. But the dark, the dark is just miserable. Luckily we're on the upswing! It's daylight by 8am now, and dark around 6. At the height of summer, it's not dark until 11, and daylight again by 4.30.

You quickly learn that vodka solves all of life's ills, you can deal with anything when you are too p****d to think/walk/stand up! ;)

They recently saved the lives of 2 polish circus elephants by giving them vodka diluted with water - something about stabilizing the inner core temp.

And just last week a dog who had licked ethylene glycol - radiator coolant was saved - to help the liver cope with the toxins they had to give vodka via IV.

Ahhh Vodka - is there
anything you can't do :D

You can even make mouthwash from vodka and cinnamon so no I don't think there is anything it can't do ;)

o_O hmmmm not sure how that'd go if I got roadside breath tested! It'd be hard to explain that I use vodka as a mouthwash >_< lol

<3 >o_o< <3

You can also clean floors with Vodka!

Sacrilege!!!! O.O

What a waste! You best go wash your mouth out.... with vodka! for suggesting such a thing ;)

One of the main ingredients in mouthwash is alcohol. So whether you're getting it from vodka, or from some factory...

Either way, I suggest using the cheap stuff for mouthwash and keeping the good bottle for yourself!

lol I'm loving your suggestion :)

Sorry your thread got hijacked by the vodka discussion lol

I hope you're managing to keep warm during such cold weather Kaysie :)

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
