So I read online somewhere on some axolotl site that aquatic plant substrates are safe and best for planted aquariums. The specific substrate mentioned doesn't seem to be available in the US.

I'm looking at Amazon to see whats available and it seems like the available product is a CaribSea product (and because I read that the parrot fish poop sand is not safe this worries me) that looks a bit too large to be axolotl appropriate. Can someone confirm?

See Carib Sea Eco Substrate here

I cant tell from the picture. But it might be worth buying and seeing how big it is, you could always send it back if its too big i suppose.

I have that substrate in my planted community Discus tank, but wouldn't use it in my axie's tank. Some pieces are quite a bit larger than others, and some are quite sharp. Maybe it would work if someone took the time to put it thru a heavy duty sieve in order to catch the larger pieces.

I use that exact product in my tanks and it is plenty small for 5"+ axolotls. It keeps my plants happy which keeps my axies happy :)

Thank you Hannah! Our new pals will be 3-4". Maybe we will be substrate less until they are older

That's a possibility. I think we will try sand and plants that tie down instead. I love planted ranks but I love live animals more.
