Tubbing and Safe Meds - Oregon Axolotls
Hello Wolfen thank you very much for answering me, I've been looking in the forum and you answer many people, I have to thank you thank you, I will deal with the saline solution, today was the first day but I will do it more often, in your opinion I try first with the solution to then switch to blue? thank you really for replying, I think he ended up biting the aquarium leaves that hurt him, what do you think of his development, is he small for 2 years? why do other axolotls have large gills?

i think he is small for his age. this is likely a result of diet- what do you usually feed him? i very highly recommend earthworms as a staple (or, main) diet choice.
gill size is usually up to genetics, he does seem to have short gill stalks but his filaments (the pinkish threadlike bits) look great.
@wolfen is right - the holfreters solution should help greatly.
meth. blue should also do very well, but those are administered via baths (or putting your axolotl into a tub of the mixture)

thanks for your answer, I'm taking baths with him for 10 minutes only, is it a good way? would refrigerate it be good? I'm feeding him with blood worms, it's his main food, I'm afraid to give him live things, would it be good for him to eat something alive? Are industrialized rations harmful? I've seen people in japan feeding him small thin pieces of chicken meat, but I didn't do any out of fear, maybe I should feed him more times a day?what is a good diet? Thank you for your help

i'm not sure about japan, but in the US there are places you can get live earthworms for fairly cheap- they're great and axolotls love them. i would continue the baths but without refrigeration, as that can be dangerous. live food usually can't harm an axolotl (unless its fish or something spiny, which isn't recommended) so live worms won't hurt him at all. i've never fed any of my axolotls processed meats, mostly because they are often packed with hormones.
my official recommendation is;
- one chopped, live earthworm every day or every other day, depending on his hunger level. if he can eat a whole worm, that would be even better
- monitor his weight (or size, rather) to see if he improves
- if he becomes picky and won't eat the earthworms, try feeding him bloodworms as well as earthworms

tried to make this easy to understand as i don't think english is your mother tongue, but if you have questions please be sure to ask!!
good luck :)

Update on axolotl,
I made the solution and the methylene blue bath seems to have improved a lot, I think it's healing, I don't know if it's slow or normal, I took it out of quarantine and put it in an auxiliary tank I took out all the things that could have hurt him and in the tank assistant, i believe the mouth wound was due to something from the tank decoration he tried to bite, but there were no dangerous things, just house, i will put new things in the original tank if anyone wants to give an opinion i gladly accept it, i have some clay items and they don't seem to have a very nice finish, I was thinking of covering with silicone and using, can I use silicone gel in my aquarium? I gave him a worm to eat chopped he ate a piece, he is eating little but every day he pecks the tweezers, I think it's ok right? he is less active than usual, is everything ok?
note: I've been very worried about him 😭 😭😭😭

he does seem to be doing better, though there looks as if his face is still a bit misshapen - could you provide pictures of him from before the injury? it's entirely possible he normally looks like that and i'm just overthinking, but still would like to make sure.
continue the treatments until he is 100% healed, meth. blue is very useful.
it is likely that he scraped himself on a bit of tank decor, so removing all decor and checking for sharp edges is advised. i would be interested in seeing what new things you mentioned putting in.
from what i know, silicone is okay for use in aquariums, but i think there is something called "aquarium sealant" or something of that nature that is made especially for aquariums. with the clay decorations, it may be a good idea to sand them down.
it's great news that he's been eating throughout all of this, i wouldn't worry about that. keep offering food one or two times a day and monitoring him.
the decrease in his activity may just be from him healing his injury, or it could be nothing. axolotls can be quite lazy creatures at times.
i think your worry is understandable, but he seems to be getting close to a full recovery. good luck :)

is there a limit amount to take the baths?, or intervals of days?
I bought the methylene blue in a fish store
I believe he bit this green leaves decoration, i tried to put real plants in my aquarium but it seems irritated with the plants moving so i thought artifices would be good, i came back talking to the person who gave it to me and apparently he is younger than I expected
I put a picture of the clay house I bought, but it looks sharp so I thought I'd cover it with silicone, or sand it
now he always has his head hidden, LOL he looks like a teenager angry with his mother, maybe the baths made him angry, but it's to improve his health
thank you for always answering

50% holtfreters can be used in the tank water all the time providing salts and minerals that are required to stay healthy, it will also help encourage gill growth.
methyline blue baths can be done daily until the cut has closed up to protect from infections.
make sure the water is oxygenated with an air stone to encourage gill growth and discourage surface gulping.
because of the force required to cause the damage under the mouth your axolotl probably face bombed into something after gulping air.
live food such as small shrimp ie.. river, ghost, etc.. small live bearing fish ie.. platys, guppies, mollies, etc.. worms ie.. earth, blood, red wriglers etc.. are all fine as food.
frozen food such as bloodworm, krill, mysis, brineshrimp, beefheart, chopped cockle/mussel/prawns are also ideal.
also axolotl pellets can be used, axolotls used to be fed beef liver strips in labs and colonies so chicken strips isn't that unusual, the main thing is that axolotls are carnivores and have to have a meat based diet.
when using fake plants make sure that nothing can be pulled of as there has been incidents of fake plant ingestion.

meth. blue can be used daily until the wounds completely heal, as wolfen said.
i also agree with his idea that he had divebombed into a plant or hide and hurt himself, as axolotls are known for doing so.
about how old is he? i thought he looked young.
from what i can see the clay hides look great, and i don't see anything sharp. (i would also like to know where you got them!!) i would still sand them just in case.
good luck, keep us updated.

unfortunate to hear he's injured himself again, i would move him into a tub with only smooth hides (such as coffee mugs) and continue the medicated baths.

depois do banho azul de hoje, today and yesterday did not eat anything
he does look better now, even after hitting his head. keep offering food and continue baths, and do your best not to worry. it isn't your fault that he's injured, and you're doing everything you can to help the situation.

i'd probably remove the rock and put in a few mugs. the jug hide seems to be suitable, unless there are any sharp edges i can't see

the rock would be fine if placed away from the glass, axolotls have a habit of trying to squeeze into the narrowest of spaces.
move the air stone to the opposite side of the tank to allow for better oxygenation.
increase the depth of the water, the less water the faster nitrogen compounds build up plus more water changes required, also more water means more room to swim.
feed daily if possible until torso the same width as head as she is quite small for age.
continue using holtfreters at 50% in the water as this will help heal and encourage gill growth.
monitor the water parameters with a liquid test kit, this is very important whilst healing from injury.
