Our pool guy fished this Sierra Newt metamorph out of someone else’s pool and left it for me in a bottle since he knows I keep various reptiles and amphibians.
I’m going to try to raise this guy and it’s been many years since I’ve had a salamander or newt.

Question is: what is the best food for something this small? Pin head crickets or wingless fruit flies?
Thanks!

For little terrestrial news, I like giving them blackworms in a Gatorade lid. Dusted lesser mealworms are usually eaten as well.

Just so you know, the state of CA considers taricha torosa and taricha sierra species of concern and it isn't legal to possess them in CA or remove them from the wild. It's nearly impossible to tell them apart visually but this looks like one of them. Please keep that in mind.

I don’t know where you get your information from but you may consider a new source.

Not illegal to own in Calif, but they are illegal to sell. You can catch and keep up to 4 a day if you have a sport fishing license. No limit if you are under 16.

Best foods: Chopped up black worms, white worms, pin head crickets, small slugs if you can find them. You can try small fruit flies but they don't normally go for those. For non-live food there are salmon pellets, frozen black worm or brine shrimp. If it's used to eating live, it might be hard to get it to go for the non-live.

Good luck to you and the little one! If you haven't yet, make sure he's been rinsed well to get any chlorine out of his system then use non chlorinated and/or conditioned water. Have fun!
