You've been warned!

i'm in the process of setting up a firebelly newt tank, and was wondering if a crested gecko and fire belly newt can live together. i know, mixing species is bad, and they probably can't.

but here's my logic:
- the setup will be either half land and half water, or 30% land and 70% water
- the gecko will almost always be up high, and the newt will almost always be in the water
- care is similar, no uvb required, can thrive at room temp, humid environment,
- similar size

problems:
- obviously poop falling, don't know how big an issue that will be
- crested gecko falling into the water, or something

my hypothesis is that as long as they never meet, it might work. i know some people keep newts with tree frogs successfully, the risk is the off chance that both would be on land, don't know how they would react.

that said, this is just a stupid thought that pop into my head and i wondered "that could work." probably won't do it though, i would have thought someone would have done so already but i couldn't find any such person while i was looking this up. would love to hear you thoughts

My concern would be the geckos drinking from the water since fire belly newts are toxic aren't they??

my thought was they only drink from being misted

Your probably right I don't know much about cresties, I'm a leopard gecko guy myself, I feel like if the enclosure was big enough it would work out really well

This is a bad idea, mostly because newts are cold water creatures (At most 70 degrees Fahrenheit) and crested geckos need warmth to stay healthy. Plus, what if the newt gives the CB gecko parasites? Most fire-bellied newts began their lives in the wild and have parasites and other diseases only made worse by being exported, being housed in very poor conditions, and being fed inadequate foods. These articles should help: Caudata Culture Articles - Species Mixing Disasters Caudata Culture Species Entry - Cynops orientalis - Chinese firebelly Crested Gecko Care Sheet Crested Gecko Care Sheet

I would say this would be a no no. Newts need very specific water conditions/temperature, as do the gecko. I would also be concerned about the gecko eating the little newt? I just think it's a bad idea love. If you could get a little 10 gallon that would be good for your fire belly. I don't know much about geckos though. Good luck..
