Air stones.

Anyone here use an Air Stone. I have 2 axies, and now that spring has arrived, I find that the temperature on the tank is slowly creeping up. I use ice bottles, but it had been mentioned to use an Air Stone and this helps with the temperature. The price of them is about 17.95 from the local aquarium. Anybody used an Air Stone in their tank and is it good for keeping temperatures down in a tank? Cheers Carol.

I have never tried air stone. But have you considered using a fan on the top of the tank? It really helped me.

An air stone will reduce the water temperature very slightly because it increases evaporation. If you combine an air stone with a fan, as Ian suggests, you could reduce the temperature by a few degrees.

I'm a bit confused by the price (about US$11.00). Is that the cost of the pump used to push the air through the airstone? The airstone itself is typically a small disposable thing that sells here for less than US$0.50 each. I suppose there are some really large non-disposable ones that might sell for the price you mentioned.

In my experience, an airstone will have very little effect on tank temperature. If the water in your tank is already well-circulated by a filter, an airstone won't have any impact at all. Switching from a hood to a screen lid, or using a fan, will have much more effect.

Thanks everyone. Well, I'll re consider buying an air stone. The price I mentioned is correct, thats at an aquarium, and that includes the pump. So from what I can gather by what has been posted, the air stone really doesn't make too much difference to the temperature in the tank. Thanks everyone. Cheers Carol.
