Axies in my own back yard?

Hey folks, newbie here, so be gentle with me.

Still on the hunt for a new axie, as my beloved pal died--due to my own ignorance of the need to keep him cool, not warm.

But meanwhile, I've discovered a very axolotl-like salamander native to this area (Pacific Northwest).

I believe it's called the Pacific Giant Salamander, and it's the spit and image of an axie--only it seems to get much larger.

It, too seems to be an endangered species, and, though I've heard it's abundant in all the fresh waterways here, I'm thinking it's perhaps not kosher or even legal to keep one in a tank.

Only reason I'm mentioning this is that I've been trying for two years now to get another axie, but without luck, and I was just thinking ANY large salamander would be better than nothing.

Meanwhile, thanx, for your attention,
M

Axolotls aren't hard to find. You can order them off the web in several places like Niles biological and others.

I asked my lfs if they could order them and they can get them from time to time (no color choice). They just don't order them unless people ask.

In the spring there should be several places offering them for sale. I would imagine they will show up in the for sale section in this forum as well.

It could be you are just not looking in the right places.

when about in spring should I be expecting, and up here in the northwest, will I ever see Taricha species up for sale in washington again? I need a few females!!

It is 100% illegal to collect, buy, sell, or keep in captivity any species of animal native to Washington State unless you get the proper permits from the department of Fish and Wildlife. I would not advise you to try and collect wild ones or purchase them from any body if you plan on keeping them in Washington State. There are some really hefty fines and jail time involved if you are caught. It would make a lot more sense and be potentially a lot less expensive to just purchase some captive bred axolotls.

It is however, perfectly legal if you want to search for herps, catch, photograph, and release them as soon as they are caught. Unless you are in Olympic National Park, then you are limited to looking and photographing.
