i feel like this is a good idea but should i replace the dirt with sand? also should there be a filter for it and a air pump?

Honestly I don't know if this would work but it might you would probably have to keep the water colder though and it depends where you live and I don't know much about axolotls but it's worth a shot you never know you know it would be cool though as if you got like a big 100 gallon tank or an indoor pond and you could do it that way

where i live its usually on the colder side

That might be okay but you might have a little bit of trouble you could do a big 100 gallon though inside and have a bunch of them in it I think that would look cool but I don't know

Outdoors or indoors? I have an indoor pond for them, and it's been working well for 15+ years.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
