My male banded newt in his new breeding dress with a couple of his females
hopfuly i get fertile eggs this time
 
Yes Dawn, Ommatotriton ophryticus (probably nesterovi).
 
Im not sure on subspecies, I have not found any papers/photos to differentiate the subspecies.
 
Wow - is one gorgeous boy !! The girls are beautiful too :)

Fingers crossed for future eggs
 
Update:
Well the crest got larger then there were eggs.

Well done! Keep us informed on their progress. It will be interesting to see how these notoriously difficult to raise newts fair.
 
The adults of these have been kept aquatic for the past two years in a 60cm x 30cm tank. Although they are ment to breed in clear open water the tank is densely planted.
They were outside all winter with 4cm of ice on top and most sides. Air temp was as low as -8

When i first recieved these they were only 2 1/2 to 3cm long, smaller than L.vulgaris metamorphs I expected somthink the size of a crested newt morph around 6cm.
I thought they were runts but now looking at some of my larvae it looks like they will to morph at a small size around 2 1/2cm.

Morphs are TINY, trully small. As you said they are around the size of your average Lissotriton.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
