Hey guys.
Its been a while has'nt it.
I havent posted since Banda died.
Well I have a new addition now. A skinny little male wildtype (he has no name yet).
I was observing him when i introduced him to his new tank, and i realised that he has a lame front hand. He cant move it and its often in a funny position underneath his arm (which he can move okay).
I think it may have been bitten at the pet shop...(dont get me started on the petshop).
Will it heal, will it pose a problem to him at all.

he also has a weird little growth on his back similar toawart or something..is this something bad.

try get photos asap

Thanks All.
Its good to be back

The arm may have been broken at some point and it has healed awkwardly. I wouldn't worry about that if its managing ok, feeding and moving about. As for the growth, cant help you there until you can post a photo. Now about this petshop ! I know you were probably trying to do your best for the little fellow and rescue him BUT really its always best to avoid buying anything that looks sickly or injured badly. You see, the pet shop have now gotten rid of their problem and passed it onto you. Lets hope he will be ok for you. Good luck

Oh no, I didnt notice these ailments at all until I got home.
He wasnt their problem trust me.
The tank was overcrowded and a few had their tails chomped on.
A small golden albino had his arm twisted and blood shot.
So I had a chat to the petshop people, and enlightened them on axies.
And as I was doing so my little male wildtype caught my eye.

Will you be popping back to the shop to see if they have changed their axolotl setup?
In my view they shouldn't even be selling axolotls with twisted broken bloodshot arms.

Hey Sinead, Good to hear from you and see you back.

My oldest axie has an issue with his left front leg. It sound similar. At times it is flat against his body and cant be used at other times it seems to be ok and in the correct position.

I don't know how it happened or what caused it but the leg has stayed healthy and doesn't appear to cause any pain so I have left it. Hendrix has a slightly bizarre swimming style because of it but that is the only drawback.

It appears that the leg dislocates out of the socket periodically and a gentle rotation relocates it.

Not sure about the growth with out a photo. Anyway good luck and great to have you back.

Here are the pics...hopefully it works

He's a bit on the skinny side, but I'm sure you will feed him up. The lump could be just part of his make up or maybe its overgrowth from a nip from a tank mate. The leg may get better with time or you may have to accept your 'special' axolotl as he is.

That is very strange eh? But just looking at the last photo, it looks like he has cloudy eyes as well. Or it could just be the refraction of light through the water as you took the photo...

Also, did you intentionally take a photo of that lump in the second photo? All these factors could be linked.

Perhaps the best thing to do now is to provide some chemical parameters.

Jay.

The hand really looks dislocated or broken; if I see it right, there seems to be a scar on his hand, too - so he might have been bitten.
As long as he has no problem with that, it is okay. But you should watch it for any sign of infection for he might abrade some of his skin from time to time just by moving on coarse ground.

As for the lump - no idea, might be overgrown flesh in the best case, but might also be some kind of parasite in the worst case. I would say watch it.

Do you have this little guy in a quarantine tank? You should really keep him seperated for some weeks.

Good luck!

He is definately on the skinny side. Unfortunately thats how I got him. All the axies from the pet shop are in that state. But I'll definately change that. Hes started eating now. And eating feverishly, just hoping he keeps it up.

Yes i've noticed the cloudy eyes aswell, so I've been giving him salt baths, i also discovered and injury on his the tip of his tail. It's obviously been bitten and I have spotted fungus here and there. So hopefully the saltbaths will rid him of this. And yes, I did intentionally take the photo of the lump.
I'll test the water toda and give you the parameters as soon as I can .

Good news, The lil guy has accquired the use of his hand again ^^, its great he hold it in a normal position and uses it properly.
Yep, Im watching it. I hope its overgrown flesh.
I certainly do have the lil guy in quarintine tank. He will be in there for quite some time.
I have to have him in there for 30 days, but also have to fatten him up, and treat his varies small wounds and fungus. So he'll probably in there for a little longer than that.

Thank you all so much.

A picture of his tail injury.

Now this injury had deterioatied to the current picture below.
When i got him i didnt even notice it until i was giving him a check over in a salt bath,
then i noticed it..a small injury.
But now all the skin around it has fallen of and it looks ew.
has the skin fallen of so it can regenerate?
its a got fungus o it to so im worried about more infection.
Im giving him salt baths one at mornign an one at night.
im on holidays now should i be taking advantage of my free time and doing it more time during the day.
If so how many?

another couple pics of tail injury

any advise will it heal okay.

Have you considered amputation? Because that doesn't look like it's going heal- properly anyway. And the last thing you want is for the infection to spread down.

Jay.

Keep going with the salt baths. I would just keep an eye on that tail for now. I have noticed a similar thing when one of my axies gets a lump of tail bitten off. The tail looks yucky for a day or two, I notice it seems to die back another centimetre or so back from the original injury and I see wispy bits of skin falling away then around day 3 its looking cleaner and i can see new skin starting to form. Just keep an eye is what I would recommend.

yeah i have considered amputation, but I'd just like to see how things go for now.
It is hanging on so amputation would be such a hard task.
Im not to sure what tools to use. (lol i KNOW how thats sounds...how about utensils?lol)

Ill continue with the salt baths too. Ill keep you all posted on how it goes.

My axie came with a few of those lumps; they seem never to have been as issue and have remained the same size. As for the tail, would be interested to see how it goes as amputation would probably heal quicker. But don't know how you'd do it .

Taken a further step..

Hey guys, today whilst my boy(new name Hades) was in his salt bath I took another look at his tail and decided that I really need to amputate.
I know I'm probably going to get people who disagree and tell me I was silly. But it was really bad, fungus everywhere and I've had a couple of comments that suggested amputation too.
I took the severed piece off at the base of it, with clean sterile scissors from our first aid kit.
Unfortunately..they arent to sterile now hehe :p
Anyways he obviously didnt like it to much but I did it in a split second.
I remember when a guy was talking about the amputation he did to his axie's leg last year.
and I gave him so much flack for it, now I understand why he did it and again I apologise to him.

Here is a pic of Hades tail now.(and also the before pic)
Im no plastic surgeon lol but I did really try my best.
And I hope this was a good decision.

Well at least you have got rid of the nasty looking stuff. I dont blame you for snipping it off. You may find it will die back a little from the wound edge till it reseals itself. But once it starts growing back it grows back pretty quickly, although it may look different from the rest of the tail.

The fact that it may look different to the rest of the tail doesnt bother me.
Just as long as he'll be okay ^^.
Hes also fattened up to!
just over the last couple of days.
Its been good.
