I realise this is probably a really stupid question and one I wasnt overly concerned about until my daughter sowed the seed of doubt lol

We have had a 2ft tank ready for some time now and just been looking for an axolotl to fill it. Well we managed to get 2 babys which arrived today, I have put them into a small container for now but was intending to add them to the 2ft tank tonight (once i have rechecked water quality is still fine). Are they to small for a tank this size when theyre only about 4 - 6cm ? (havent measured them, but i was told they were this size approx and it looks right, without disturbing them by getting a more acurate measurement lol)

Sorry for the stupid question, but i dont want to stress them by putting them in their big home if theyre to small.

Before anyone mentions that a 2ft tank is to small once they get bigger to house them both, i fully intend on getting a much larger one before it gets to that point :p

Thanks in advance to anyone able to help without laughing :p
Im fairly sure that it will be fine for them, but you know what it's like once someone has sown the seed:eek:

Hi Blabberwort!

Perfectly good question.

However, with them only still being juveniles, my suspicion is that they should probably stay in their smaller container tanks, with daily water changes for ease of feeding and maintenance.

Maybe someone else can clarify?

If the 2ft tank is ready, water is OK etc. I'd put them in mate.

Of course it's a larger space to clean and maintain - but too much space won't hurt.

Personally I would say at that small size they need to be in smaller containers. At this small size they will need to be on very small food which would be very hard for them to find in a large tank.

If you really want to put them in the big tank then I would suggest you take them out to feed them in a seperate tub. At this age mine were still living in small containers surrounded by loads of daphnia, they need to eat often at this age.

thanks for all your replies :D After much umming and ahhing after reading your replies and talking to the breeder billy james (who is a star may i add :D ) we have put the container inside the main tank. I think I saw somewhere that someone else had done something similar.

Our main concern was the temperature in the container, we're having to use a fan on the big tank to keep it at a steady 19 degrees. If we dont use a fan the temperature becomes far to high, which obviously we dont want. With that in mind, leaving them in a container elsewhere may have caused temp issues. This way the fan will keep the water in the main tank cool enough which should maintain the temp in their smaller container.

Also easier to keep their container clean after feeding etc, but once theyre in the bigger tank im probably going to use the jar method anyay, and daily removal of debris will happen as standard routine.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, it's very much appreciated.

Sounds like a good plan! Good luck with your little ones and remember we like photos! ;)

Hi blabberwort, I got my axie from Billy James too nearly 2 months ago now! The golden i got is just absolutely fantastic!!! and it is growing really fast! And delivery was fast and the axie never seemed stressed when i got it and fed straight away.

Good luck with the new additions to the family and i bet everyone is dying to see pics real soon.

They seem to have settled fine. We're calling the golden one Marmalade and the white one is Boo.
I'll get some piccys up when i can :D

Boo seems to be the more outgoing and he's a bit of a piggy too lol, marmalade is the less active of the two at the moment and doesnt seem as hungry as Boo (no doubt that will change :p )

wow i named my golden Marmaduke! he/she seems to be very interactive, always bites my finger when i put it near him and he is hungry. I've bumped his food up to 2 cubes of frozen bloodworm from 1. he/she is such a greedy guts!! :O)

Another question

When im changing their water should i use the dechlorinated water only or is it better to use the tank water that their tubs floating in, or better to use 50/50?

So far ive been doing the 50/50, as I wasnt sure about using the dechlorinated only because obviously it's not like the tank water which has been cycled.

Thanks again for your help:happy:

Hi blabberwort,

I change with 100% dechlorinated water while Marmaduke is still in his big tub. I dont think it will harm the axie if its 50/50.

Thanks Claire, your replys appreciated :D

Hi Blabberwort.

7 of the 8 axolotls I have were acquired at a similar size to yours and have all gone into a 2 foot quarantine tank initially until they are large enough to be a compariable size to the inhabitants of the four foot tanks.

I have never had problems with them in either tank

thanks ianclick it's good to know should we decide to move them into their new home sooner rather than later :D
