as far as im aware marbled newts need quite a large water area all year round they are a semi aquatic species and wont thrive without a bodie of water for swimming.
all though i do not keep this species and have very little experience with them
I keep my marbled newts terrestrial all year with the exception of the breeding season. Mine will become aquatic during the winter and leave the water towards the end of spring. Some keepers choose to keep them mainly aquatic but mine won’t stay in the water if I give them the choice. I always have some adults who never take to water and remain terrestrial all year.
You might consider using flow pots filled with sand or gravel for your land areas. Care has to be taken not to drop the pots into the tank, especially if it is already filled with water.
May be you should make a bit bigger terrestrial part with a place to hide. Then you could really see if they want to be terrestrial and then change all the set up.
