I went to my local pet store today and they had not heard of Glass Shrimp and could only offer me Brine shrimp which I have heard die fairly quickly in fresh water. Any ideas would be great!

Its a pain in the •••• I know all too well. They're available from brisbane, oddly enough but they dont survive the plant trip over to sydney, let alone perth. I'm considering going to lengths to get a colony and breed them commercially myself, as there's a virtually monopolistic market here in NSW.

Glass shrimp are notoriously bad for being DOA (dead on arrival).
You're best phoning around aquatic stores and finding one that can order in.
You can transport them in fish bags, two in each, and they're good for up to 10 hours travel as long as they're not shaken about too much.
(They stress easily)

lol the only thing Australia has that's close to a shrimp is what we call a 'yabbie'. Unfortunately these things can grow as big as axolotls themselves, with big pincers, so that rules them out :\

I haven't had any luck finding a store in Sydney that's able to get any kind of usable shrimp in

The Yabbie is a flipping CRAYFISH! *blinks in surprise* Supposed to be tasty though.
Good greif... Well, I would certainly agree they're unsuitable for keeping with Axolotl... :S

You can have blue crayfish as pets, but they are tankbusters.

I don't know what to reccommend in this case. There's no way they'd survive a journey of such proportion, even if you could get a shipping license for them.

OMG UR FROM ALBANY!! i dont know many people in albany with axolotls

oops anyway u could try vebas in perth if u can get them u should be able to get them ther they are in oconor fremantle corner of carrington and forsyth u can look on ther site

Recommendations on where you buy products should be placed in the testimonial section..

haha amber I saw some blue crayfish yesterday at the store; thought they were toys until they waved their pincers!

Thanks Clay for the tip will have to look them up. Yes I live in Albany but have only had axies for 2-3 months. Will keep in touch.

yea it is a type of crayfish but the certan type they are speaking of are yabbies the blue aquarium yabbie

Yes they do stock them was ment to pick them up this morning, first order, but they were a no show. Will let you know when I get some maybe next week. Oh and just a note yabbies are commonly refered to as being a member of the fresh water crayfish family grouped with maron. But not directly related to salt water crayfish.

ghost shrimp/ glass shrimp are easy to find! in ur local creek or lake

my local lake has heaps of em the live in the reeds so they are easy to catch aswell.

Sarah, im in Rowville aswell and would LOVE some glass shrimp! What lake are you talking about? Cos i went to a massive petstore in Dandenong the other day and when i asked if they had any shrimp they told me they only stocked live fish and i needed to go to a deli or something!

Rowville lakes, the 3 big lakes off stud road. Or go to the lake in carribean gardens thats where my axie breeder gets his shrimp from.

oh i also forgot u will need a bucket to store them in (of course) and a net with a long pole. I use a pool net.

hmmm Thanks Sarah, im going to see if i can borrow a net from someone and head down. If i cant get hold of one ill head down anyway and see what i can come up with. Do they hang round the edges or are they in deeper?
