Hi,
I'm new to the site and would like for someone to help me identify and sex my newt. I'm pretty sure he's a male C. Orientalis but I'm reading up on Hypselotriton and now I'm confused. I am interested in breeding so I just want to be sure. Thanks!

Cynops orientalis was placed in Hypselotriton in 2009. The new name doesn't appear to have been adopted that widely. Taxonomy can be fickle.

That's a male Cynops orientalis, or if you're feeling all modern you could call it Hypselotrition orientalis.

Also, unless you feed him on land or in a dish, I would get rid of the gravel. Newts and salamanders will try to swallow their food, and might get a mouth full of gravel and get impacted. Impaction is no laughing matter. They can't get their bodily waste out and then they die. Try to get sand or reptile carpet

Thanks for the suggestion Xavier. I am looking into getting rid of the gravel asap. Geezer has always had gravel and been okay but my newest addition is around 2 years old and did swallow one while trying to catch a worm that fell under the moss. He's still eating and pooping so i'm hoping he passes it. When should I consider a vet? If he stops eating regularly?
