Please help.

My Axolotls front leg is currently in a rather uncomfortable and painful looking position.
Instead of facing forwards like normal it is pointing backwards in a way similar to her back leg.

Is there anything that I can do?
Will a vet be the professional to see?

Im at a loss on how to help my poor Axolotl.

This is a bit of a tricky one , would you be able to post a photo as it'll be helpful for any one who can offer better help. Has she damaged it , I appreciate it sounds like a daft question but if she was caught in something or some how twisted it while trapped it may explain what might have occured , and finally does she seem at all bothered by this?. It might involve a visit to a vet because from your discription it could possibly be dislocated..is that possible? . I would phone my local vets and see if any one has any knowledge with dealing with axolotl..I must admit I keep meening to do this so I am prepared in case mine need a visit.

Ive taken a few photo's but am having difficulty uploading them.

She isn't acting much differently as far as I can tell. She has moved around a bit since this afternoon but not a great deal.

When I first came aware of her leg I did offer her some food in hopes that she was just sitting differently. She ate what I offered but she didn't move her leg which was worrying. Her other leg did move slightly in attempts to take the food. Normally during feeding she tends to move alot more than she did this aftermnoon though.

I did add a new ornament for them to hide in on the weekend. It could be possible that she has caught her leg on that. Its a round log look alike tunnel that I purchased from the aquarium at the same time as I purchased my new Axolotl, Aztec.

I am very carefull about what I place in my tank and when I am rearranging the rocks I do ensure there is adequate room for them to move around each ornament.

Ive never had to take Axol or any other of my axolotls to the vet before. Its never something you wish to have to do either though.

Do you have any suggestions as to the best way to transport her saftely and as stress free as possible?

Now its gone furry.

The joint in her leg that appears to be the location of the problem has begun to go furry. (the kind of furry that food goes if not removed from the tank immediately). She is still eating and moving around her tank though so thats a good sign.

It proved difficult but I did find a vet that specialises in exotic pets and he has plenty of experience with axolotls. I have bought a little holding tank to transport her in and have booked the earliest possible consult this afternoon.

After explaining her condition to one vet, they said (depending on the severity of it which I consider rather high) it may require amputation :errr: .

I read somewhere that axolotls have the ability to regenerate lost limbs.
Is there anyone who has experienced this happening?

Amputated limbs will grow back.

How did it go at the vets? was thinking about your little axy earlier.

Final Result.

Thank you all for your assistance and concern.

We had a sucessful trip to the vet.
The vet we saw is trained in the treatment of exotic pets.

What the vet said had happend was that she ringbarked her leg on something (what I think it was has now been removed from the tank). This resulted in all the blood supply being cut off to her leg therefore causing her leg yo die, hence the 'furryness'. using a cotton bud the vet was even able to push aside the dead flesh to reveal bone. Gross.

The solution? A dab of local anaesthetic and a pair of really sharp scissors. If the injury had been any higher up her leg than it had been then she would have required a full anaesthetic and surgery to remove the leg.

The vet also gave her an injection of antibiotics to assist with her recovery.

Upon bringing her home she was able to go straight back into her tank to rest after her major ordeal. Like the good girl she is, she kept up her appetite the entire time.

Thanks again to all.
Sam and Axol.

I'm really glad to hear how well she's doing, and what a great vet !

I'am vary glad things turned out for you. We need a section were we can have a list of GOOD vets.

Hi,

I have been looking for a decent vet to take my axie to in Melbourne, are you able to supply me with their name and number please.

Thanks I would really appreciate it.

Yeah I'd like some info about your vet too, just in case of any emergencies that might happen.

As I was ambling throught his site and various links I stumbled upon a list of recomended vets, I have a feeling it may be one of the moderators have a page or too, I'll aim to look for it by tomorrow ( started a full time job, sick kids,a childs birthday party to set up and a pressie top finish creating.. I do prefer a quiet life!!)
