Hi, I'm planning to get some fire bellied newts and will really appreciate some advice as I'm new to newt keeping. I am just starting the set up of my first tank so there will be a lot of questions :) Can't wait to get my newts!!!

Hello Eva! Welcome to the forum and to the wonderful world of newt keeping!!:D

I think you will find that you are among many friends here. I have had my C. Orientalis (Chinese firebelly newt) for about a year now, and she has lived with my friend for a year before that. I believe she is starting to lay eggs now! I have companions for her that are the same kind that I have had for going on three months now. They all seem to be well adjusted and all eat very well. They like gut-loaded crickets, mealworms, thawed frozen bloodworms, gut-loaded chopped nightcrawlers, and gut-loaded chopped red worms. I have had to go through a lot with some other ones to get to this point, being that they were wild caught, as most (if not all) pet store ones are, and had been stressed from their shipping and handling conditions to get there. Their immunity had been made weak and it does not always show up right away. If your little guys are doing well after 30 days, you can breathe a sigh of relief, but still be on the lookout for signs of disease and isolate one if it appears to be ill as a precaution.

I for one would obtain my next ones from someone here who breeds them, or happens to have had them breed. They often advertise. This way, they are much healthier and are already used to captivity. There is much less of a chance for disease. You can go either way, and I am sure you will be happy with them, but I have had to go through heartache in dealing with the pet store variety since sometimes they have died on me in spite of my best efforts. Maybe it's different there?

I really look forward to being helpful in any way I can, and am looking forward to your posts and pictures!

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks everyone for making me feel welcome! I have read everything I could find on the internet about newts and really love this website. I will post pictures once I've got everything set up.
