Identification..

Here are pics of three male Triturus newts, I am not 100% sure as to what species they are. Any opinions welcome.

Here is species #1 I was originally told that it is T.karelinii before I saw it, but it looks more like T.carnifex to me.

Here is species #2 they were sold to me under the name T.cristatus, which is what I've believed up until now, but I'd like other's opinions just to see.

this is species #3. It was sold to me under the name T.karelinii, which wouldn't surprise me, but I've seen a lot of confusing (possibly mislabeled) pictures when I was doing searches to figure it all out.

Don’t take that as a definitive answer…

#1 is debatable. It doesn’t have the typical bluish karelinii colouring. Crested newts are annoyingly variable. #1 appears to have slightly shorter digits than #3, a definite karelinii, which may suggest carnifex.

I’d get some second opinions.

I got them all from members of the forum. The first karelinii and the cristatus came from the same person.

I agree with Mark
1 & 3 > karelinii
2 > cristatus

Number one could be a karelinii from a contact zone with carnifex or dobrogicus which would explain the intermediate features...

the first one seems to me carnifex macedonicus. i own a great stock so i think this is a macedonicus.

the second i do not know, cristatus.

the third is 100% karelini
