Internet Browser Recommendation

We're talking about the Windows version. It's quite buggy and Apple really ought to be ashamed of themselves considering their marketing campaigns.

I've always been a fan of firefox, loved the tab features from the start and other addons you can get - makes my work so much easier rather than jumping from window to window as in the old IE.

Also like the fact you can drag and drop your bookmarks/favourites webpage and create relevant folders to the space above each tabs.

Husband can't stand it probably because I download the different coloured themes and change them once a month or on a whim - I've never used the spellcheck - easy enough to turn of. He uses Avant browser, which is similar looking to IE without all the problems - very similar features to Firefox as well.

We never use IE it's crashed our pc too much and had numerous problems with it. I have to use IE7 unfortunately when I'm at the office in town = but even then we find we spend more time offline then on while the IT guys sort things out. They meanwhile get to use Firefox to sort things out - we aren't allowed to and only get access to IE7.

Sounds like my partner :p He complains when having to use my computer because of all my Firefox 'bling'. He also uses Avant, which is using IE but with a lot of Firefox's features so there isn't the compatibility problems you sometimes get when using Firefox.

Also, yea iTunes and Safari on Windows are appalling. I have heard they are better on Macs, and they'd want to be! With iTunes I get frequent crashes, takes minutes to load on my high spec home PC and also my dodgy work PC (so busted on Vista and XP), often won't render correctly so I get big black patches, and recently it deleted all my iTunes purchased songs saying I had used up all the licences... :mad: Currently checking out some third party software to run my iPod with and I won't be buying any more iTunes songs!

Ever looked at Rockbox? It's an alternate firmware that allows you to use your iPod as an MSC device, like a thumbdrive. You can just drag and drop music on it. It plays .m4a files, I believe the extension for tracks ripped by the AAC encoding. I'm not sure about the DRM songs, unfortunately. I really like it for my Sansa e200 series.

I am a fan of Firefox, too -I use 2.0 at home and 1.5 at work.
I especially like the Adblock-Plugin, too since I have a lot to do at News-Sites and many of them are clogged with advertisements.

I have never found any spellchecker-option, though - how can I activate and test it?

The spell checker defaults to being "on" but you probably need to load a dictionary. To do this type something into a web form field and right click, choose "languages" and "add dictionary". Once you've added the dictionary the spell check should work. (You can check it's turned on in tools>options>advanced>general)

I installed this after John told me about it. ( had asked if a spell checker could be added to the forum as I am a diabolical speller!!!!) . It suits my needs perfectly..even the kids after an initial cry '' oh whats mum done to the 'poota this time...can't find anything ..etc etc. like it. So thanks John for the tip.

You might be wondering if they know something you don't. Well I can't speak for everyone else but I can sure offer my own thoughts - Firefox is my Internet browser of choice...

Well, I've been thinking about it ever since you posted this...I finally did it tonight. If my life doesn't significantly improve, I'm holding you personally responsible...

Firefox is Great!

What I like best about Firefox is that it loads sites so much faster than Windows. Also the Add Ons are easy and interesting. Rarely crashes and is less susceptible to viruses. Love it!

Just an update on the usage percentage of Firefox on Caudata.org: It's now over 23% from 20% in
January. Together we can wipe out Internet Explorer, hehe.

One problem I have with it is that sometimes it won't let me put pictures in my blog, and then I have to go back and open it with Explorer.

That's more likely to be the blog site's fault than firefox. I have only ever had one problem with it since I started using it exclusively in January.

Macphile here. Safari does it all!

IE = Internet Exploder. If you don't care for Firefox, Opera also works well on PCs.

I believe we talked about this earlier in the thread but no harm bring it up again. I actually own and use a Macbook pro every day for work and play. I use Firefox on it exclusively. The sad fact is that Apple's Safari was way behind the curve until a few months ago when they finally introduced tabbed browsing. We also have Macs at work and there's Firefox on all of them.

In fact just when Safari was catching up, Firefox was preparing to hit an entirely new version which is now available (version 3). Internet Explorer 7 users and Safari 3 users owe the existence of their browser versions entirely to Firefox version 1 highlighting the lack of features in IE and Safari.

Personally I find it funny/sad/silly that Mac users think they know it all, and PC users think they also know it all and the two look down on each other for some reason. Seeing the browser issue in the same way is a mistake.

Oh I agree completely- and I use both PC and Mac interchangeably. I've been a Firefox user (running it on a PC since the beginning) for a long time and the tabbed browsing is by far one of my favorite features. Safari was not without it's problems, that's for sure.

Just to let you all know, Firefox 3.0 came out a few days ago. It's a nice sleek upgrade and the process is quick and painless.

Firefox 3 is *great* but the install for me was far from painless :p Took me over two hours to set it up again as it got rid of all my bookmarks, then wouldn't import my backups! But I do mess with my settings a lot so probably my own fault as everyone else seems to have no trouble!
