Wow, in March I was told its female, could it have just become mature over the summer?
 
Is that when you acquired it? Sometimes newts that are stressed or under nourished for whatever reason seem to lose some of their secondary sexual characteristics. Once they are settled and eating properly the sexing them is much easier because their body shape returns to normal.
I have read accounts of some newts that have actually changed sex, but I've no idea if that's even possible!

Yes that's when I got it, it was near death from starvation and stress. It's amazing it survived. My other newt got along with it but for months has been attacking it so the young newt has been stressed, so bad I'm going to have to re home it, if it's a male that makes a lot of sense now. Apparently my big male being 18 doesn't tolerate any other newt around.
