Thanks for the information Paul! Is there a reason why the females would need long tails? I had thought the long tail would be useful for the male during courtship. Male Ambystomatids have longer, wider tails than females.

AW: Laotriton laoensis egg laying susbtrate

We often see this in different salamandrid genera (Laotriton, Paramesotriton, Cynops), pond and stream species! So I am not sure about the reason.

My only objection to silk plants from craft stores is the unknown metal used to stiffen them. The Metal could prove toxic.

never mind toxic; they are just so butt-ugly.

I never understood the concept of fake plants; that's kinda like fake chocolate. I mean what's the point? :bowl:;)

I use silk plants for my laoensis to lay their eggs.
I bred them now since 2006, tried a lot, and can say that these silk plants are the best substrate to lay the eggs.
Always enough "plants" with large leaves and the optimal consistence, and -
I take the leaf with the eggs out; the larvae slip after 5 - 6 weeks; parts of living plants rot in this time; silk plants are clean until all larvae slip.
And it is nearly impossible to have always enough living plants with large leaves for hundreds of eggs, which do well at 16 °C over months.
