I recently bought two S. salamandra larvae and I'm havinga bit of trouble identifying which is closer to metamorphosis. It's hard to see any changes considering I see them everyday, so I'll be posting weekly updates (or bi-weekly) here for myself and anyone else interested. I would also appreciate if someone could give me some advice on raising these guys, as this is the first time I've cared for larvae.

Week 6
These guys are already about six weeks so we'll start from here. (Note: this is not the container that they're kept in)

One of them is noticeably smaller, yet darker than the other. The other has gradually grown larger (fatter) but doesn't seem to be turning dark yet.

Oh do they? Huh, well that should make for a more interesting timeline then! I'm a bit too eager to see them morph though.

They've probably got a couple of weeks before they morph. Mine morphed between five and seven weeks, the smallest morphed first. The key is keeping them cool and dark, always less than 15c.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
