I got two Fire Belly Newts today and the setup they had been living in.These are my first Newts and I want to make sure they are in the right enviroment. It is a ten gallon aquarium with the Tetra Waterfall filter in one corner, it has gravel, about six inches of water, a fake plant that looks like leaves on a bush, and my main concern is several large rocks they look like Lava rocks that you see in gardens but they are very rough and I am wondering if this is good for the newts skin.Any suggestions on improvements or things I could add or take out would help alot. Also should I be misting the tank? What would be an ideal substrate for Fire Bellies? Thanks

It sounds fine to me. I don't think the rocks would be a problem. You don't have to mist the enclosure. Gravel is ok, but the newt could possibly swallow a piece and become impacted. To prevent that, you could try a bare bottom tank or you could use play sand. For more information you can go to www.caudata.org/cc.

Well first we should figure out which kind of fire belly newts you have; Japanese or Chinese?

These two links are a great way of being able to find out which one you have and how you might be able to improve their environment.

Gravel with rocks larger than their head is a good substrate, you will need to get a large siphon and tubing for your water changes. There is a lot of people with a lot of different ways to take care of their tanks, I would suggest siphoning every two weeks. Once a month I would change the filter. You can feed them by thawing out a blood worm cube in some water from their tank and use tweezers to feed them, which reduces rotting food getting lost in the substrate and it's a good way to keep track of their health. If you drop a piece of food you can use a turkey baster to grab that up. You can also buy a few glass shrimp at a buck a pop and throw those in to keep you tank clean, but you will also have to feed them their own crab bites, to keep their exoskeletons strong and keep them active. Just make sure you stay away from crabs and large pinchers.

Lets see, I know Chinese are less tolerant of high temps, where as Japanese can take the higher heat as long as it isn't 24/7 exposure. Keep asking questions, post pictures of your set up, you have tons of great minds on this forum. Use the search option to find exactly what you need.

GOOD LUCK AND WELCOME to the awesome world of amphibians!

Thanks for the help. From the pics I would say I have Japanese Fire Bellies because of the rough skin but im not sure because they dont have that much orange on their bellies they have more like white and orange speckles. On the feeding side of things my newts are really shy so how could I coax them out to feed them?Should I just pick them up and try to feed them?Which is the better substrate gravel or sand or nothing? Also what type of live plants does this species prefer?Wouldnt live plants be better for them?Ill post pics of them as soon as I figure out how. Thanks for all your guys helps.

Don't try to pick them up, they surely won't eat like that. In your other thread you were asking about types of food, and I think that's the key - they need something that they recognize as food.

I wouldn't worry about the lava rock being rough. But I would worry about possible escape (if the waterfall filter is the hang-on type). See:

Be sure to read the FAQ (link in my signature line).

Its the one thats just a hunk of rock with a filter inside but its not hanging on the side

It sounds like you definitely have a cynops p. which is GREAT! They're more hardy and I have three of them, therefore I'm bias. Plants are great for an aquarium, they turn nitrates and nitrites into a nontoxic form. You need your Nitrate, Nitrite, and Ammonia tests, which you can get at petsmart or any other store accompanied with fish. Probably not walmart though. I'm not sure if plants do much for the ammonia, but all of those can kill your newts. Though I'm sure the setup has had time to create a good biofilter. Just remember, the strips of paper are notoriously inaccurate, get the tests with the small tubes and chemicals.

What kind of substrate do you have now? Simple gravel is best if you're gonna be planting, you can find all kinds of aquatic plants online, the best are java fern, java moss, and anubias which all thrive in low light. Those are the three favorite plants of mine. The newts like resting on the anubias leaves. You can also invest in some aquatic grass and maybe densely plant an area of your tank. I bet you they'd love it. Japanese fire bellies love densely planted environments.

BUT this means you WILL have to hand feed them, because you don't want to siphon a ton and mess with all the roots and whatnot. I've been having trouble hand feeding mine, but in the end; four weeks later, all three are eating from the tweezers. Funny thing about my newts, Ra and Pete like blood worms and earthworms. Shadow ONLY takes earthworms... SO what I suggest, thawing a blood worm cube in some of there water in a small dish, pick out the good pieces, nice and fat, and dangle the worm in front of their noses. Newts have GREAT eye sight and might become afraid of your huge form, it's possible they won't take the first few times, BUT the instinct to eat always prevails. IF the blood worms don't work I would suggest to you a great tip, try earthworms. If you cut off the tip it will keep moving you can see if the movement makes them bite. Maybe you can even place it in front of them and walk out of the room. After they take the first bite their bound to take the next, that's how I got my toughest egg to crack.

Update us soon. Lets see some pictures, you would be surprised what kind of suggestions people might come up with or some observation that might be made.
