Hi i have heard that Werneri is just a local form of s.s.Salamandra is this true.

Salamandra salamandra taxonomy is subject of great debate. The current list of subspecies is as far as i know greatly based on genetics. Not everyone agrees with this, and different currents of opinion will opt for different taxonomical theories.
I personally think it´s a bit confusing, but it serves a purpose...identifying particular populations which vary from others signifcantly enough so that segregating them is useful to maintain their genetic uniqueness. Otherwise people just breed them all together and we end up with hybrids with no natural value.

I personally think they are a sub species in their own right, not a local type os s s salamandra.
My own animals are completely different, both in shape, colour and temperament.

I was pretty sure i had a paper with the genetic sequences of the salamandra, will have to see if i can find it.....

Azhael make a good point that applies to many herp. We know very little about many of these animals. The chance of messing up their genetics and then turning them lose in an environment that they are maladapted to is very real. It also runs the risk of making it difficult to do accurate population studies in the future. We don't want to great "our own" breeds of salamanders like we have done with dogs, gold fish and axolotls too for that matter.

Although come to think about it, it might be nice to have a Salamandra that could fetch paper :D

yes i think its all abit confusing too all i know is they are stunning salamanders.
And thanks for all the replys
