Verry Nice Ummi, Mine are showing some red allso recently. I got them allso from Germany (Dietmar). Good luck to you two!

Do Salamandra always have yellow eyelids? At least, the ones that aren't spot-less.

Good question, I know there are some tingitaná populations witch can have strong reduction of the yellow spots, As you can see on figure 10 : http://vipersgarden.at/PDF_files/PDF-1367-gb.pdf I allso have some animals from this location of my own but are still young. Black and black and white animals are allso common in this area.

AW: Re: Salamandra algira algira

all my salamander have yellow eyelids - except which have red eyelids :)

Re: AW: Re: Salamandra algira algira

From those pictures, and what you posted, it seems like that's the normal, unless the animal has abberant coloration.

did you notice one of them has a perfect heart on his neck ? Daaang...can you be any cuter ?

Come to think of it, maybe S.s.gallaica is the only one i ever saw without yellow/red eyelids and even that, most of them do have it.

Beautiful animals indeed. Would love to see an update when they are adults!

salamandra atra atra and salamandra lanzai are completely black, no yellow, neither red

Great looking animals, from both of you. Like them a lot

AW: Re: Salamandra algira algira

hopefully they grow up to 30cm, when I get them they were very little nice Algiras - see them in my hand, it was 25. Mai 2011
5 month later 25. Oktober 2011 they grew to 12,5cm - wonderful looking salamander

very very nice Jeroen, through this Algira we are related - the kids are from the same breeding, the same Mama-Algira,
I also keep them since last week in a 70cm case,

Waw, they grow fast on you than Ummi. Yours are much rounder two. You know fast growing is not allways good right. You feed them allso calcium? But nice to see some brothaers and sisters. I know Jari has a nearly adult sister and proublebly brother of ours, looking verry nice ! :)

AW: Re: Salamandra algira algira

the carrots you see in the case are for the woodlice and house-cricket,
I feed earthworms for calcium and different maggots...Dinner is served...

That's a beautiful vivarium, Jeroen. How often do you clean the water dish?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
