that's a great tank! you should add some cover on the land and water areas

Thanks for the advice I will post some more pics in a bit would you put live plant cover. Or are you suggesting something else like a rock or peice of wood.

both! you could put fake plants in but IMO live plants are better.

Here are the updated pictures the first one was a week old.

Is the newt already living in the tank? And, if so, is the newt mainly aquatic or staying on land? My general suggestion is deeper water. You could try using a brick to hold back the gravel. I have bricks in nearly all my tanks.

Yes I have had him for 6 years. Well he is about 50/50 but he usually lies on his plants above the water so mostly land but not by much. Thanks for the gravel suggestions about the gravel

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
