Hi guys I have a couple of tiger salamander larve that I found in my backyard woods. I'm keeping them in a cage with 3/4 water and 1/4 land and today I noticed they were crawling around on land. Which is weird because they still have gills. So I left them. Is this normal, should I put them back in the water? What should I do?

When my tiger morphed all but the tiniest of gill stumps remained. It would rest closer to the surface with the nose breaking the surface, then occasionally move onto land areas. If startled however it would move quickly into water again.
If any of my morphing animals moved onto lands with noticeable gills I would be rather concerned about their water quality.
Could you maybe add some photo's of them please?

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
