This is an awesome set up. I had a quick question though. is your drift wood anchored in any way to the side or bottom of the tank or is it just free floating?

It's anchored with black silicone and Great Stuff - the first post has a link to a construction thread. I think the pictures still work 
Because the plants have grown in (a lot) since it warmed up, here are a few more pics. I also moved Sneaky (the young newt) in with his parents, so there are now 4 newts in the set-up:

I thought the duckweed was gone, but it was just biding its time...
Full tank shot: I actually like the overgrown pond look, and the newts like it too, so I don't plan on trimming much back.

Thought this thread was due for another update:
We moved to a new house and the tank ended up in a room with less natural light, so I bought a nice new brighter light for the top - a Coralife T5NO fixture. I really like it so far: it's cool (relatively), bright, and was extremely reasonably priced (~$40) for an aquarium fixture. I also turned the filter back on (I keep it off during warmer weather because it heats up the water a little bit).
There are now 3 large ramshorn snails sharing the tank with the newts. They seem to do a decent job of cleaning up algae and leftover newt food. The newts also eat their kids, so they're not overrunning the tank yet.
