I am glad he ate something today.

Tap water is what you should be using. What were you using before? Use a dechlorinator, use the stress coat if that is all you have it dechlorinates.

The tank that had the medication in should be washed, rinsed and wiped out well. You do not want any of the medication left in there. If you were using filters, decorations, plants etc on that tank rinse them out as well.

Now.. back to square one.

Axolotl needs salt baths twice a day for 10 min.
The directions are above in this thread.

The aquarium that had rock/sand ect. I take it you have it back full of rocks and water and now need to cycle it.

The directions are above in this thread.

You need a test kit what will allow you to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.

yep all these i am going to do,the salt baths will start tomoro, i am going to clean the tank again tomoro too, (hopefully for the last time)
The tank is back to rocks and large river pebbles, as soon as the tank is all cleaned again i am going to put the filter in the pond out back and speed up the cycle a little. i took some pond plants today and put them in the tank, so i will get some more tomoro and add those to the tank to help cycle a bit more too. Hopefully KHALIDA will get through this, i saw a test kit at the local today so i will be getting one and testing every thing, and double checking here, BEFORE i put him any where near the tank again.

hi cynthia, so far so good, i have been doing two salt baths a day, with water that is the same temp as the tank he is in, he is busy hanging out at the moment lol,, he has had 1 pellet to eat, i have also offered blood worms, but he isnt interested, but im sure he isnt going to give up, all the tank stuff is in the pond getting ready for me to cycle the tank, his feet still look pretty bad, and sore, there seems to be little flecks of blood very close the the surface of the skin on his legs and feet after the salt bath, i reduced the amount of salt a little more, im sure im not using too much.
i guess its all a matter of waiting now, is there anything else i could be doing for him??
thanx so much for checking in on us we appreciate it.

You could put him in the fridge. If you do just keep extra water in the fridge to salt bath him in so it is the same temp.

To entice him to eat, try using some Hikari Carnivore pellets. They have a really strong smell, so that may work. When we were discussing foods a while back, someone said their axie couldn't get enough of them. Maybe try keeping some live ghost shrinp in his tank, too. Just try one or two at first, see if he eats them.

thnx brian i will go and get some and give them a try, i am getting a bit worried about him not eating.
cynthia~ i am going to give him a couple more days and see how i go and if there isnt any improvement i am going to put him in the fridge, i realise that putting him in the fridge is ok for him but does it have any side effects??

It will just slow down his metabolism, it also slows the progress of the infection, which is what we are after.

Just take him out every few days change the water and feed him.

I have heard of no side effects. If any one has experienced any side effects hopefully they will post them.

hi reeba

as cynthia has mentioned putting him in the fridge will so down his metabolism.
you will probably find that he won't be hungry and therefore food will not be so much of an issue. he might not eat for days. when my 4 got sick with fungus, they basically lived for a week in the fridge without any interest in food at all.

also, as cynthia has advised, go ahead with the salt baths, i've found this to be as good as any medication. keep a volume of "salt bath solution" in the fridge so when you take then out of their fridge water and into the salt water solution, there will be no change in temp.

brian- those hikari carnivore pellet things are like ridiculously expensive at my local pet store, are they the same way where youa are?

They are pretty expensive, but they arent ridiculously so here. Can't remember the exact price.

an update on khalida
well khalida is in a medium sized tank that i am keeping at a cooler temperature of between 10oC and 14oC, i decided that putting him in the fridge may not be a good idea in this house, since the kids arnt sure how to shut a fridge door????? and wen they do shut it it gets slammed....???
sooo, i have decided to try to keep the tank cool instead, do u think that this will be ok, khalida hasnt eaten again since the 1 pellet last week..
and his feet are almost totally gone now, they are just little nubs on the end of very red and raw looking legs.
i have been doing salt baths twice a day, and have put a cover over the tank to try to give him some privacy to heal, but its not looking good.
uhoh.gif

i have been turning the filter on at night and off in the day with just the air stone going.
(its only a small airstone)
i have also added a few more hidey spots to this tank.
i really dont know what else to do, his feet and legs are looking so awefully sore. i feel sooo bad for him.... i wish there was some sign of improvement, but its just getting worse , not better.. anything else i should be doing for him.????

This isn't necessarily related to Khalida, but when you bought him, did you notice how the other axys were? I am familiar with the store you purchased him from, and to be truthful, they are kept in less than ideal conditions - all crowded together is a small pond. I'd love to be able to help you but I don't have the experience. Here's good luck. Keep posting.

hi anne marie, when i got khalida he looked healthy enough except for his feet were pealing, i was told that this was ok, and i was also told that he was a she.
there were other axie's in the pond(???)
with legs missing and gills bitten.
mind you i am yet to find a fish shop that actually knows what the hell they are even talking about.
it would be better if they just said "i dont know" when answering any questions, as opposed to pretending they know the answers and giving the complete WRONG advise...

woooo now i have that off my chest
lol.gif

while im posting i have a question about giving salt baths.
i can see that it is good for them and i do use salt baths on my fish and my hermit crabs, but...
it seems to stress Lida out quite alot,, is there any proper way that i should be transfering him into his salt baths?

When I was stressing some time back cos my axie hadn't eaten, I gave him a salt bath. I tried for a really low salt concentration but he absolutely hated it! Was wriggling and trying to jump out of the tank, so I took him out straightaway. Scared the hell out of me. He ate a few days later, all on this own

.

You are absolutely right, and it astounds me that not many pet shops AT ALL seem to know what the best this-or-that is for axolotls. I honestly believe that this forum is THE best place to go.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the pet shops where you are. Unfortunately, alot of the people who work in pet stores know nothing about the animals they are selling, and are hired simply because they applied, and the store needed help. The best thing you can get in this hobby, whether keeping reptiles, fish, or anything else, is a shop that knows what they are doing. Ask around, ask other hobbyists, and don't be afraid to quiz people at a shop before you buy anything there. And once you find a good shop, stick with it.

As for getting your axie to eat, have you tried frozen bloodworms? Mine went crazy for them yesterday, and I didn't think they would eat for a few days because they were so stressed.

I've definately had some bad pet store experiences as well. I purchased a chameleon a while back, after much research. I looked up how to determine male from female. When I went to the store I wanted their opinion, so I asked what sex it was. The guy was like, "I'd say its a male." Then I told him what I had read...which would make it a female. (I wasn't trying to trick him, just wanted some advice) After that he was like, well, I'm really the snake guy, so I don't know....He should have said that first! I haven't found a pet store around here that knows what an axolotl is yet (I adopted mine from a University).
Guess I felt the need to vent about pet store as well. Of course I know there are some good ones out there.

Brian, my problem was ages ago - about a year probably. No probs for me at the moment, thankfully. But yes, frozen bloodworm usually gets accepted.
