Yes it's a good idea that you went with the sand instead of the cork. Not sure how cork would affect the water quality, so sand is the much better option

Stefan was using cork, not Rob.

About the cork: it floats, a lot. I'm not sure how effective it would be as a substrate.

Joan, I am so glad you pointed that out! I stayed up so late last night up until nearly the crack of dawn this morning. I was so busy working on my comic at the very same time as scrolling through www.axolotls.org forum and i hadn't even realized what I typed! LOL.
